Misinformation and Disinformation 1

Welcome! I am here to talk about how misinformation and disinformation is being spread all across social media and the news.

What is the definition of Misinformation and Disinformation?

The definition of misinformation is unintentionally writing fake news about a topic that can lead to confusion. This happens because the writer doesn’t know enough information about the issue and decides just to make educated guesses. The definition of disinformation is when people write fake news but do it intentionally or on purpose. This happens because it is a good tool for propaganda that the government uses, and it is used for either propaganda or profit in a company to make everyone believe in a common thing that only benefits the writer.

What is the difference between Misinformation and Disinformation?

The difference between misinformation and disinformation is that misinformation is fake information that was done by accident, while disinformation is information that was done on purpose and intentionally, to make a profit or used to scare the people.

How are both of these a problem for social media users?

Both of these are a problem for social media users because most of the users on social media can be heavily influenced by their favorite celebrity, so they can really say anything they want. It will confuse everyone who is following them. So if they say something that they want their followers to believe, they can just say it and convince them all.

How are they being spread on social media?

Misinformation is being spread on social media by people who don’t know what they are talking about, convincing everyone that their opinion is right. Disinformation is being spread by people who want everyone to believe that a certain way of doing something is right.

How is AI involved with the spread on social media?

AI is involved with the spread on social media because the AI chooses what to show to you, so since the AI influences what you see on your feed, it can also convince you on what you’re doing.

How is video and audio part of the problem?

Video and audio is part of the problem because they can influence what you see and things can be edited. So not everything that is seen online is real, and it can be used to alter peoples minds on whats real and what isn’t.

Who is spreading Misinformation and Disinformation and why?

The government and influencers are spreading misinformation and disinformation because the government is the one that wants you to believe the disinformation that they are putting out on the internet and news, and influencers are making people believe in the things that they believe in.

How is fake news related to Misinformation and Disinformation?

Fake news is related to misinformation and disinformation because fake news normally isn’t fake because of lack of knowledge, it’s fake because they want the media and everyone to fall for their fake information, either because they’re working with the government or because they want to protect the society from the truth.

Why do people fall for it?

People fall for it because they decided to start believing in everything that they see without doing much research. They also believe the big companies that put out disinformation for profit because they are “trusted” by everyone. They also want to have the same opinions as their favorite influencers and celebrities.
